When I was growing up in Hawai'i, I was told that our banyan trees, characterized by many roots and one trunk, symbolized how people came to the islands from all over the world and contributed to the unique culture that is there today. Today, we recognize that this overstory is not so simple. Inspired by those banyan trees, Passages is composed of both native and invasive plants in Massachusetts, intertwined and bound together. The copper mesh flowers are meant to oxidize and age during the course of the exhibition.
